TACTILE DOME
Summer 2012
San Francisco, USA
Originally conceived in the 1970s, the Tactile Dome is an immersive installation. Designed to be experienced in total darkness, the Dome challenges the primacy of sight by guiding visitors through a winding series of tactile passages, using only their sense of touch to promote deeper sensory awareness and reflection on the nature of perception.
The renovation upgraded architecture and systems for safety, accessibility, and longevity while preserving the Dome’s defining qualities—its sensory richness, spatial ambiguity, and physical engagement. The result is a revitalized environment that honors the original vision and meets the needs of a contemporary public institution.
